DescriptionCanal tunnel under Sydney Road - geograph.org.uk - 2171080.jpg
English: Which came first? The canal was constructed through Sydney Gardens between 1800 and 1810, and Pevsner describes Cleveland House, which is over the tunnel, as being early 19C. I should think that the canal was made in a cutting and covered over, with a tunnel portal at each end, and the house built on beams over an arch. I now wish I had walked through to inspect the inside of the tunnel.
